Artists Statement

There is no part of the British landscape untouched by human influence, even our wildest places have been affected by the plant and animal species we have introduced or driven out.  Humans exert control over the landscape and use it primarily for our own ends, allowing for ‘nature’ but on human terms.  Our relationship with the landscape is complicated, multifaceted and ever-changing; it fascinates me.  With growing understanding of the damage humans have wrought on our planet are we capable of change?  Through my practise I research the expectations we place on our landscapes by exploring specific places, familiar to me and attempting to view them from different perspectives to ask what we want from the land and how it might respond.  I delight in discovering the means by which nature evades our control.

I work in print using a variety of techniques.  The process of working on a matrix slows me down and makes me consider my images more fully.  Peeling the first print from a plate is a magical moment - you're never entirely sure what you've got.  As with nature, printmaking likes to evade control and I embrace the serendipity of chance in the process of making a print.

Artist Statement

Peeling back the paper from the plate is a magical moment, the big reveal; the answer to the question, the prompting of more questions.  This is what fascinates me about printmaking and why I choose to explore the natural world through the medium of print.

My work is rooted in places I feel connected to, most regularly the Swinley Forest, which borders my village.  I record the changing seasons, the transience and vulnerability of the natural world and consider the impact of humans on our changing landscape.  Human desire to exert control over the landscape and nature’s possibility of evading that control is fascinating, particularly in the context of a forest managed for timber production.

The technical side of printmaking requires patience and practise, yet it is an artform which lends itself to experimentation.  At the core of my practise is a deep-rooted desire to experiment, explore and ask ‘what happens if…?’.  Experimenting with a range of techniques leads to one informing another and prompting new ideas.  This leads to new ways of looking at the landscape and so process and experience become cyclical.
