Low Residency Day 1: Collaborative making with Alex Schady

Wow, what a day! To start with it's just so lovely to see people in person!

I didn't really know what to expect but thought this sounded fun. Alex asked us all to state our expectation of the day and seeing as it was a collaborative exercise I plumped for meeting people - reconnecting (in person) with old friends and making new ones.

Alex gave us an introduction to his practice and then we were given pink and yellow parcel tape, pink tissue and card and asked to make 'an extension to our body'. Alex had talked about incorporating our practice into the day so I wanted to make something referencing trees. I encased my left leg in tissue and tape then cut myself out and added 'branches' and most importantly 'roots'.

Throughout the day we got into pairs and then larger groups and gradually turned our individual makes into a larger whole-group performance and finally considered them as sculptures.

We had to each film holding a camera phone somewhere in the make. I angled mine down to look at itself but the camera slipped so I mainly filmed the floor. There's something interesting about the footage.

I'm looking forward to seeing the footage that others took and will add it here.

Overall I thought this was a wonderful introduction to the week, it was exhausting but interesting and even for someone like me who doesn't do performance or this type of making usually it was fun and an interesting way of thinking about my own practice and exploring it in a slightly different way.
