Low Residency Day 2: Book Art

Jo Boddy

I was really excited about the session today and it didn't disappoint!

Book artist Rosie Sherwood came from Cornwall to talk to us. She started by asking 'what is book'? Lots of ideas were thrown around ... information, communication, 3D, story, pages, contained, images...

She told us that Chelsea holds the largest archive and Johanna Drucker's book 'The Century of Artists Books' is very important.

We went to the Book Art Bookshop where I found the most beautiful book 'Kitchen Garden' by Dizzy Pragnell. The pages are paper thin vegetables, it's simply beautiful and so extraordinary that I had to buy it!

After lunch we got down to making. I was really excited by this part, there's something about using bone folders and just the process of making an object that really excites me. We did concertina folds, concertina with a pocket, different ways of folding a single sheet and by cutting specific parts the page can be folded in different ways. We then used stitch to join some pamphlet pages.

Jonathan spoke to us about possibly using some of these ideas for the catalogue for our end of year show which I think would be wonderful, especially when he suggested that it's something that could be made during the show. So much to think about there but the idea of having something that we made together with something from everyone as a moment of the course would be wonderful, even if it wasn't widely distributed!

The other thing that Rose mentioned was how interesting the book arts students business cards were and the fact that because they were so interesting people didn't throw them away nearly as often and wanted to keep them.
