I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Cezanne exhibition. I was fascinated to learn that in order to paint Mont Sainte-Victoire better Cezanne learned as much as he could about the mountain, from it's geology to the ancient humans who had lived there. This confirmed to me the importance of my desire to undertake far deeper research about my local area.
I particularly enjoyed the landscapes on display and reading the reactions of other artists to them. I have put together a sketchbook to help me remember this exhibition and the things I took away from it.
Transcribed notes:
Cezanne applied watercolour in separate brush strokes, not large areas of wash. He built up the colours using layering, letting each layer dry before adding another.
He studied the Mont Sainte Victoire from many perspectives. He looked at the geology and history to give himself the greatest knowledge and understanding of the mountain possible.
He was interested in the experience not just the aesthetics.
Work seeks to communicate his knowledge, understanding and therefore his experience of seeing the mountain to the audience.
